We took a test on Ancient Greece. I think I aced it and Mr. Schick told us a story of a doctor who said he was related to Alexander the Great. We had to know about Mycenae is located on a rocky ridge on Peloponnesus,  protected by a 20-foot thick wall.Homer lived at the end of these “Greek Dark Ages”.
  • polis: fundamental political unit, made up of a city and the surrounding countryside
politics (affairs of the cities), policy, political, etc.

  • aristocracy: rule by a small group of noble, very rich, landowning families
  • oligarchy: wealthy groups, dissatisfied with aristocratic rule, who seized power (often with military help)
  • tyrant: powerful individual who seized control by appealing to the common people for support

    • all Athenians (rich or poor) are equal under the law
    • but death is the punishment for many crimes
    • debt slavery is OK (work as a slave to repay debts)
  • Solon’s reforms (594 BCE)
    • outlaws debt slavery
    • all Athenian citizens can speak at the assembly
    • any citizen can press charges against wrongdoers

Etruscans- north central part.  (metalworkers, artists, architects) The Greeks had many colonies around the mediterranean sea. The Latins settled. Cloaca Maxima (largest ancient drain) which channeled water to the tiber. Lucius Tarquinias is is the final king of rome and he is proud of his accomplishments but he is a tyrant and got rude. The line says “no wonder they didn’t want any more kings” In the book it says that the new king seized power from his own dad (sextus). Then the lyrics say “Can this get any worse? Yes” This shows that Sextus tried to force himself upon Lucretia. She says no and Sextus threatens to kill her. The next line of the rap says “they turned around and ran that tyrant outta town / next thing you know, no kings no more…” This shows that the people rose up and kicked the whole family out of Rome, which is what the book says. Another line from the rap says “Hey, we got three governments rolled into one Patricians and plebeians havin’ some fun”. The book ...
